Dear Parents,
We will be taking a field trip to the Bonne Terre Mines. The students will get a chance to see what it was like to be a miner in the 1860’s. This mine is a national historic site located in Bonne Terre Missouri. The fifth grade class would be able to learn about what mines look like on the inside and how the miners were able to get around and create the mine. The students will also be able to see may tools and tracks that were left behind by the miners when they walked out of the mine in 1962.
The purpose of this visit is so that students are able to grasp the concept of supply and demand, as well as see the consequences of economic decisions. This visit to the mine relates to our Social Studies curriculum perfectly, as well as language arts common core standards. Students will need to wear tennis shoes and dress accordingly, the temperature in the mines is a constant 65 degrees.
I cannot wait to take this journey with your fifth graders, I am sure they will have so much to tell you when the get back home. Not only are the students getting a great learning experience, but they are getting to see a national historic site that will amaze them.
To prepare for our trip, we will be reading "Whistle in the Dark" by Susan Hill Long and watching several videos about the mines. I hope your students have a wonderful time. Please enjoy a look around the website and let the students see what they will be experiencing.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Crawford
